Chrysis o Chrysura ?

Postby gbooth on 26 Feb 2009, 13:02

Here you have another one. It was quite large, aprox. 10 mm. I thought it could be Chrysura refulgens, but I am probably wrong.
Shot in Sierra Nevada, S Spain at 2600 masl between rocks. 27/July/2008.
Thanks.

Wow,
this should be Chrysis hydropica Abeille.
It is really unexpected at 2.600 m! It should live along the Mediterranean costs. Maybe I'm wrong but the shape of the T-III is typical and there are not other European species belonging to this group. For sure the colour of the thorax is different from the other C. hydropica. Maybe it is a variation due to the environment (altitude). Anyway it is not a common species.
Did you collect any specimens?

Thanks a lot Paolo,

These photos are taken in a National Park in Sierra Nevada so you can not take specimens unless you have a very special permit. I anyhow never collect anything. In the future I will try to take photos with all the necessary details for identification (if the insects let me). It is true that all insects at those hights show colour modifications. It is common for them to be darker among other things.
In the future I will also post through your WEB site.

Cheers,

Guillermo
