Notes on the Species of Vespa and Vespula described by Dong

Postby Anthony Daglio on 18 Dec 2015, 16:43

From 2001- 2005 Professor Da-Zhi Dong of the Kunming Institute of Zoology has described six new species of Vespinae from Yunnan Province, China. These species include: Vespa magunensis Dong 2001, Vespa hekuensis Dong & Wang 2003, Vespula yulongensis Dong & Wang 2002, Vespula yunlongensis Dong & Wang 2003, Vespula nujiangenis Dong & Wang 2004, and Vespula gongshanensis Dong 2005. Using translation notes and the diagnostic characters provided in the abstracts of Dong's papers Carpenter et al (2011) synonymized five of these species as: Vespa analis (F.) (1775) (= Vespa maguanensis Dong 2001 and Vespa hekuensis Dong & Wang 2003), Vespula flaviceps Smith (=V.yulongensis Dong & Wang 2002), Vespula orbata Buysson (1902) (=V.nujiangensis Dong & Wang 2004), and Vespula rufa (L.) (1758). These new synonymies were included in Archer (2012).

In 2012 I have received photos of all of Dong's new Vespinae species and had sent these photos to John X.Q. Lee, Robert S. Jacobson, Libor Dvorak, Michael Archer, James Carpenter, Jiang-Li Tan, and Kees Van Achterberg for their opinions. At that time I was unable to identify Vespula gongshanenis or Vespula nujiangensis. To clarify id English translations of Dong (2001) and Dong et al (2003, 2004, 2005) were kindly made by John X.Q. Lee. After comparing the translations and photos to existing taxa I had arrived at the conclusion that V. yulongesis looked very much like a queen of V. rufa grahami and that V. yunlongensis looked like a queen of V. flaviceps. These findings of the identity of V. yulongensis/yunlongensis were reported on the basis of these facts in Carpenter et al (2015). Later I had been sent a photo of the holotype of V. gongshanensis from Kees Van Achterberg and identified this specimen as a queen of Vespula structor and James Carpenter had re-discovered the type specimen of Vespa orbata arulenta Buysson and remarked that it was a synonym of V. structor (J.M. Carpenter pers comm) NEW SYNONYMY.

Later Carpenter et al (2015a) had revised the taxonomy of two of Dong's species resulting in new synonymy. Vespula rufa (L.) (1758) (=V. yulongensis Dong & Wang 2002), and Vespula flaviceps Smith (1870) (=V. yunlongensis Dong & Wang 2003). Vespula yunlongensis Dong & Wang 2003 was overlooked by Carpenter et al (2011). In the spring of 2015 Dr. Jiang li Tan and Dr. Kees Van Achterberg went to The Kunming Institute of Zoology in Yunnan, China to study Dong's Vespinae species. They had informed me of the results and had sent me a photo of the Holotype queen of Vespula gongshanensis Dong 2005 for help with identifications. Both Jiang Li and Kees Van Achterberg have studied the type specimens of Dong's Vespinae species. Upon the results of the examination of Dong's specimens, the taxonomy of two more of Dong's species were reclassified by Tan et al (2015) are listed as follows: Vespula structor Smith (1870) (=V. gongshanensis Dong 2005), and Vespula vulgaris (L.) (1758) (=V. yunlongensis Dong & Wang 2003). In this review I follow the nomenclature of Tan et al (2015), Tan (2015) (In press). I am adding a list of the synonyms, notes on types, and world distribution of All the species described by Dong and Revised by other authors. Notes on the type specimens of Vespa maguanensis, hekuensis, Vespula yulongensis, yunlongensis, nujiangensis, and gongshanensis are included in Li et al (2015). Additionally, James Carpenter has found the holotype of Vespa orbata arulenta Buysson (1905) It was identified as Vespula structor Smith (1870) (J.M. Carpenter pers. comm). I am updating the nomenclature of Vespa orbata var. arulenta Buysson, which was previously considered a synonym of Vespula koreensis Radoszkowski in Carpenter & Kojima (1997). This change has been added in Carpenter et al (2015b) (unpublished) as Vespa orbata arulenta (=V. structor) SYN. NOV. and in the checklist below. After reexamining the holotype of Vespula nujiangensis Dong & Wang 2004 and many workers of Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer 1982 found in Yunnan and other parts of southern China, I consider Vespula nujiangensis a synonym of Vespula koreensis. NEW SYNONYMY

The revised synonymy of all Dong's Vespinae species are included here:

English translation: http://www.academia.edu/3275174/Dong_et ... RANSLATION
Notes: This species was considered a synonym of Vespula orbata Buysson by Carpenter et al (2011), Archer (2012), and a color anomaly of Vespula orbata Buysson in Tan et al (2015). Recently, I have examined many queens workers and males of Vespula orbata, Vespula flaviceps, and Vespula koreensis from Southern China. Some of the workers of Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer from southern China (Yunnan) were very reddish in coloration (especially the gaster) and identical in every way to the holotype of Vespula nujiangensis Dong & Wang. I consider Vespula nujiangensis a synonym of Vespula koreensis. NEW SYNONOMY Vespula koreensis now consists of four color forms or subspecies: V. koreensis koreensis Radoszkowski, V. koreensis stizoides Buysson, V. koreensis salebrosa Archer, and V. koreensis nujiangensis Dong & Wang.

d.) Vespula structor Smith (1870)

TYPE LABEL DATA OF VESPULA GONGSHANENSIS DONG 2005
Type Repository: Kunming Institute of Zoology, Yunnan, China
Holotype#: 0057909
Paratype#'s (387 specimens): 0057910-0058296
Type locality: Gongshan County, Yunnan Province, China
Notes: Specimen# 0057910 was the allotype in the original description.
Paratype photo: http://www.kiz.cas.cn/museum/museum_ky/ ... 14116.html
Description of Vespula gongshanensis (In Chinese): http://www.academia.edu/1511508/Dong_et ... IN_CHINESE
English Translation: http://www.academia.edu/2293154/Dong_et ... RANSLATION
Notes: Vespula gongshanensis was listed as a synonym of Vespula rufa (L.) in Carpenter et al (2011). In 2012 I had seen a photo of the Paratype specimen (a queen) and could not discern the identity due to the photograph being of poor quality and the specimen being discolored. Later I had received a photo of the actual Holotype (a queen) from Dr. Kees Van Achterberg. I had confirmed the id of the holotype as Vespula structor Smith. This new synonomy has been followed by Tan et al (2015) and Tan (2015) (In Press).
