A list of works on the social wasps of the Russian Far East

Postby Anthony Daglio on 01 Dec 2015, 00:28

I am compiling a list of the studies on the social wasps of the Russian Far east in this post in order to have a further understanding of these wasps on the whole. There are many interesting forms that exist in this area and hopefully this list will promote further interest in these wasps. In my opinion there are several species in the Genus Dolichovespula (D. pacifica Birula, D. pacifica loekenae Eck, D. norwegica peruana Saussure, D. saxonica kamtschatkensis Eck, and D. saxonica nigrescens Eck) Also three forms described by Birula (D. media lugubris Birula, D. adulterina colchica, and D. saxonica monticola) are of interest. I am not 100% if they are synonyms of other species. There are also there are a few forms in the Vespula rufa group that need to be reinvestigated (V. rufa spp# A (Undescribed form), Vespula schrenkii Radoszkowsi, and Vespula schrenkii spp#B (another undescribed form) which warrant special attention. I am adding images of these species.

Here are some images of Dolichovespula pacifica loekenae Eck. Matsuura & Yamane (1990) and Pekkarinen (1995) considered D. pacifica and D. loekenae to be subspecies of Dolichovespula norvegicoides and Archer (1989, 1999, 2006, 2012) consider loekenae a subspecies of pacifica even though Eck (1984) and Pekkarinen found differences in morphology and male genetalia. Recently Persson (2015) found genetic differences between populations of D. pacifica and D. loekenae. I consider the two to be distinct forms. D. loeknae is stable in color pattern throughout its entire range which is quite widespread and so is D. pacifica which is restricted in its distribution. Plus both forms do not overlap in distribution and are disjunct populations. I think both of these forms warrant reinvestigation.

Here are some photos of the nominate form of Dolichovespula saxonica Fabricius to compare with the subspecies. The nominate form is found in European Russia but is replaced by Dolichovespula saxonica nigrescens Eck in the Russian far east and Dolichovespula saxonica kamtchatkensis Eck in Kamchatka.

Here is an undescribed species or subspecies that is found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Hungary across to the Russian Far east. It differs from the nominate form of rufa in having the markings of the head, thorax, and first abdominal tergite being ivory white and the rest of the abdominal terga are dull yellow. Archer (1997) briefly described workers of this form from Sweden.

Here are some photos of Vespula schrenkii Radoszkowski, A species found in Korea, China, Mongolia, and the Russian Far East. In the coarse of my studies I have decided to treat this form as a distinct species. In Eastern Asia it has several subspecies or species closely related to it (Daglio Unpublished).

As can clearly be seen a taxonomic revision of some forms of Vespula and Dolichovespula in the Russian far east is warranted.
