A list of works on the Vietnamese Social Wasp Fauna.

Here is a list of works on the social wasp fauna of Vietnam. In general studies on southeastern Asian social wasp fauna in Indochinese countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand is incomplete and information on the Vespinae genera of those regions is partially documented to unknown. However Vietnam has been getting a fair amount of study it is in hopes that the adjacent countries of Vietnam can be studied to get a better idea of the social wasp fauna in southeast Asia as a whole.

Note: Provespa nocturna most likely does not occur in Vietnam which is far from the core distributional range for this species. Madl (2012) suggested that the specimens of P. nocturna were probably obtained from dead specimens on ships. Additionally Carpenter & Nguyen (2002) and Nguyen et al (2006) did not find any additional species of P. anomala in their extensive studies on the Vietnamese Vespid fauna.

Note: Additional species of Vespula that may be found in northern areas of Vietnam with further sampling could be Vespula koreensis stizoides Buysson and Vespula structor Smith. Both of these species have not been currently recorded in Vietnam, but a possibility exists that they may occur in these areas as both of these species have been previously recorded from nearby areas in southern China and Laos. (See Gusenlietner (2011) and Archer (1982)). Vespula koreensis stizoides Buysson is restricted to southern Asia and known from very few specimens and Vespula structor Smith is fairly widespread in southern Asia.

While we are on the topic of Indochinese wasp species, here are links to some papers on the social wasp species of Thailand. These are not many studies on the social wasp fauna of Thailand and the studies I have have posted links for here are the ones I have found so far. The best work on the Genus Vespula to date has been written by Yamane et al (2016), which records three species: V. flaviceps, V. koreensis salebrosa, and V. orbata. Additional Vespula specimens from mountainous areas of Taiwan that were not mentioned in Yamane et al (2016) are located in the collection of Bob Jacobson. They are a queen of V. flaviceps (see photo below) and a worker of V. koreensis salebrosa.

NOTES ON NEW LAOTIAN RECORDS OF VESPULA SPECIES: Gusenleitner (2011)* lists the following Vespula species found in Laos are Vespula flaviceps Smith and Vespula structor Smith. I am attaching a photo provided by Libor Dvorak of a worker of Vespula orbata Buysson from Laos. NEW RECORD. I know of two other Laotian specimens of Vespula orbata to date.

Recently Nguyen et al (2015) has discovered two unidentified species of Vespula in northeastern Vietnam listed as Vespula sp.1 and Vespula sp.2 in a recent paper on the social wasps of northeastern Vietnam: (In Vietnamese) http://www.academia.edu/19612827/Nguyen ... VIETNAMESE

These unidentified species of Vespula are of great interest. I have a feeling that these two species could be Vespula flaviceps Smith and Vespula structor Smith which were recorded in Laos by Gusenleitner (2011) (Eine Aufsammlung von Faltenwespen aus Laos im Biologiezentrum Linz) and also in southern China. Another possibility is that one of these species could be Vespula koreensis stizoides Buysson which is a rarely collected species which has been recorded in Yunnan, China and Laos Archer (1982). I will hopefully receive some photos within the next few days from Lien Nguyen of these mystery Vespula specimens. I will update the checklist upon the identification of these two species upon species id. Also of interest is the the color form of Vespula koreensis described by Nguyen et al (2006) (Vespidae of Vietnam 2. Taxonomic notes on Vespinae) judging by the description in Nguyen et al (2006) it seems to match the description of workers of Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer. This subspecies has been described by Archer (1982) (A Revision of the subgenus Rugovespula of the genus Vespula). A full description of Vespula koreensis is given in (Misidentified as Vespula orbata Buysson) Yamane et al (1980) (A tentative revision of the subgenus Paravespula in eastern Asia) (Also see Archer (1982). Hopefully I will be able to clarify the identity of the variety of Vespula koreensis in Vietnam as well soon.

Last night I received some photos of the mystery Vietnamese Vespula species from Lien Nguyen who has done many excellent reviews on the Vespidae of Vietnam. I have now identified these specimens to species level. This shows that three species: Vespula flaviceps Smith, Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer, and Vespula orbata Buysson are now currently known from Vietnam. With Vespula flaviceps Smith being newly found in Northeastern Vietnam (Nguyen unpublished). Two other Vespula species such as Vespula koreensis stizoides Buysson and Vespula structor Smith, both of which have been recorded in India, China (Yunnan), and Laos. There is a possibility that these two species could also be present in northern Vietnam. Vespula koreensis stizoides Buysson is known by very few specimens. 1.) Vespula koreensis Radoszkowski (=Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer)
Notes: These were represented by four workers of the southeastern Asian Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer which is currently treated as a subspecies of Vespula koreensis. V.k.salebrosa was described by Archer (1982) and was also described by Yamane et al (1980) In Yamane et al (1980) V.k.salebrosa is misidentified under the name Vespula orbata Buysson, while V. orbata was listed as Vespula minuta Dover.

2.) Vespula orbata Buysson
Notes: The specimens of Vespula orbata consist of a queen a male and many workers.

3.) Vespula sp.1 (Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer)
Notes: These specimens all appear to be workers of Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer.

4.) Vespula sp.2 (= A queen of Vespula koreensis salebrosa or a dark colored queen of V. flaviceps)
Notes: This is very dark colored queen of Vespula koreensis salebrosa Archer or a dark colored queen of V. flaviceps Smith. Dark colored queens of Vespula flaviceps are known from southern China. I have seen a few dark colored queen specimens from Hong Kong, and Yunnan.

5.) Vespula sp.3 (=Vespula flaviceps Smith)
These specimens represent 2 workers and a male of Vespula flaviceps Smith.
