Males of Dolichovespula flora found and described from China

Postby Anthony Daglio on 15 Apr 2014, 00:42

I am attaching an interesting paper below which describes the males of a rare yellowjacket wasp Dolichovespula flora Archer 1987 for the first time. D. flora was previously known from 5 specimens (1 queen, and 4 workers) according to Archer (1992)(New information about Dolichovespula. Sphecos 23: 2-4). This recent review by Tan et al has improved the understanding of this species as all castes are now described and variations are noted. A comparison between queens and workers of the Chinese D. flora Archer 1987 and the South Korean D. kuami Kim & Yoon 1996 are discussed. The male of D. kuami is currently unknown. Once males are found of D. kuami it´s status can be settled. The nesting biology for both species is lacking. It would be interesting to see how the biology and behavior of these two species compare with the North American D. maculata (L.), and the European D. Media (Retzius). A paper on the nesting biology of D. flora as well as some other Chinese species such as D. stigma Lee and Vespula flaviceps Smith will be written (Kees Van Achterberg pers. com.).

Here is a link to Kim (2011) This is a paper that is a companion to the new study above as it describes queens of D. kuami for the first time as well as re describes the workers from new specimen and compared this species with D. flora.

Here are images of the holotype worker of Dolichovespula kuami Kim & Yoon as well as a few images of xanthic and melanic workers to compare with D. flora Archer. Until males and dna testing on these wasps is conducted it is uncertain if D. kuami is a synonym of D. flora. Personally I consider both to be distinct species in their own right.
