Dolichovespula sylvestris?

Dolichovespula sylvestris?

Postby Jann Wuebbenhorst on 15 Feb 2018, 20:23

Is it possible to determine this Dolichovespula male? I found it in the vicinity of a nest of D. saxonica, so I first thought of this species.
But the colouring of Clypeus and other parts of the head seem to be more like sylvestris?

Found in a garden on Echinops; eastern Lower Saxony, Germany; 30.07.2017

best wishes,
Jann

I disagree. It is a male and they are more variable than workers. I have many saxonica males with such coloration. Exact ID is possible according to different punctures on clypeus, which is not well visible on these pictures...

You mean coloration of clypeus or coloration of entire body?

Both clypeus and gaster.

I can only add two photos of this specimen in side view, which probably won't help that much; but no better view of the clypeus, unfortunately.

For me D. sylvestris is obvious  -not only pattern different than saxonica but also brighter hue of yellow.
