Vespidae - Fuerteventura

Vespidae - Fuerteventura

Postby Marion on 28 Dec 2016, 19:56

Hello,

I found this wasp in December in the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura, Costa Calma. Unfortunately, I did not manage to get better photos. It looks different compared to other orange wasps which I met before in Costa Calma. Is species ID possible?

Thanks,
Marion

Hi!
The structural details (tegulae, palpi, etc.) and the colour pattern indicate that this is the rather beautiful Pterocheilus coccineus André 1884, a species which in the Canary Islands occurs both on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote and is also found in the Maghreb and Jordan.

Greetings,

Leopoldo Castro.

Hello Discoelius,

thank you very much for the identification of Pterocheilus coccineus and additional information. :)
Hopefully I meet again this nice species in my next holidays.

With best wishes,
Marion
